Welcome to year 5's class page! It's lovely to have everyone back. I hope we have an amazing year!
Our first topic is "Sometimes, you just need to change your altitude", we'll be learning all about mountains around the world, life and atmosphere on high summits and investigating ordinance survey maps. We will also learn how to record weather data across the world on graphs. We will also look at the eight points of a compass.
In maths, we will be focussing on place value starting with numbers to 10,000 and moving to 1,000,000. We will be comparing, rounding, partitioning and ordering. We will then move to addition and subtraction, with a focus on numbers with more than 4 digits. We may have time to begin multiplication and division, but the majority of this concept is planned to be taught next half term.
In English, we are basing our fiction unit around the book "Everest" by Alexandra Stewart and Joe Todd-Stanton, we will be focussing on building tension and suspense in our writing. We will then look at poetry, specifically free verse based loosely around our topic of mountains and nature. We will use personification, similies and metaphors to add effect to our poems.
