  • Weekend Residential - St Michael's Environmental Education Centre

Thu 14 Jun 2018 Mrs Blackman

On Friday 8th June, 29 intrepid explorers and three mad leaders, set off for an adventure in the Peak District.  What an adventure it was.

The weekend started with a 'gentle walk' by the River Derwent to explore the area and get used to our walking boots and equipment.  We met a few cows along the way and encountered many bugs.  Our explorers were fascinated by the river and this helped us to decide on some additional activities for both Saturday and Sunday.  We headed back to the centre for a late tea of pizza, wedges and salad to fuel up for the adventures ahead.

Saturday dawned and what a beautiful day it was for a hike.  With backpacks loaded full of lunch we set off.  The aim was to walk to the top of Stanage Edge and then finish at the ice cream farm.  It was a massive undertaking for us all so we set a steady pace.  We had a snack stop at the Mill Ponds and Stepping Stones, where we decided to cool our feet in Hood Brook.  Then it was lunch at the Plantation before our final ascent of Stanage.  The view was breath-taking and we rested at the top to take it all in.  From there it was mainly downhill to Thorpe Farm for a tour of the ice cream farm and to sample the goods.  Sophie's strawberry and cream ice-cream was a definite favourite.  We finished the short walk back to St Michael's and a well earned rest.  A super achievement for all.

We spent Sunday orienteering and boat racing in the grounds of Brookfield Manor.  The weekend was rounded off with a final picnic lunch by Hood Brook and then a very tired group travelled back to school.

A selection of photos from the weekend are included with this report, please take a look.

I'm already looking forward to next year!

Our thanks this week go to Mrs Bratherton who led a very interesting careers assembly all about becoming and being an engineer.  She told us that there are many different types of engineer and how important they are to all areas of industry.  I feel we may have a few budding engineers in the school who have been inspired to find out more.

A huge thank you to Mr Nuttall this time.  Mr Nuttall is one of our parent governors and has also been in the police force for a significant number of years.  He came along to assembly today to let us know a little more about what a career in the police force entails.  the children were very interested and had lots of thought provoking questions to ask.

A huge thank you to Mr Poyzer for coming along and giving us a talk about the fire service.  We were fascinated to hear how he became interested and the amount of training and learning he has had to do over the years.  We found out lots of amazing things which our fire fighters do to keep us safe and how they help us when we find ourselves in danger.

  • Spring Festival

    Sun 05 Apr 2015 D Blackman

After a very busy term, our very first Spring Festival was a fantastic way for all the children to get together and celebrate the arrival of spring.  Every child made a spring decoration to hang on our Spring Tree and each class shared a poem, story or song with the rest of the school.  We sang some of our new favourite songs like "Clever Little Bulbs" and "New Day" and finished with a rousing rendition of "Holidays are here again!"

Enjoy your break everyone, see you on the 20th April ready for lots of learning and fun.
