  • Year 3 - Phoenix Class

Class team: Mr Mangham and Mrs Foulkes

Welcome to Phoenix Class and the beginning of Key Stage 2. Year 3 is an important and exciting transition. Children encounter new challenges, deepen their knowledge and become increasingly independent, while continuing to receive the care and encouragement they need. Our classroom is a place where questions are welcomed, effort is noticed and everyone is supported to succeed.

    Learning in our class

Our Autumn 1 topic is Ancient Greece. Children discover what life was like in Athens and Sparta, learn about the Ancient Olympic Games, and explore the gods, goddesses, myths and legends of the period. In English, Flat Stanley supports comprehension and The Iron Giant is our end-of-day read. Children study myths and legends before writing their own, alongside a journey tale. Maths develops place value to 1,000 and increasingly confident addition and subtraction. Science explores balanced diets, skeletons and muscles, while art and design includes Greek mythical creatures and clay vases. Music, RE, PSHE, gymnastics and fundamental movement skills complete a rich and varied curriculum.

    Reading and learning at home

Regular reading remains essential in Key Stage 2. Please encourage your child to read widely, talk about new vocabulary and explain their ideas about a text. Weekly spelling and times-tables practice will help build the fluency and confidence needed across the Year 3 curriculum.

    Useful class information

PE is on Tuesday and Thursday. Children should come to school in the correct PE kit, with earrings removed and long hair tied back.

There will be a spelling test and a times-tables test each week.

Please make sure all clothing and belongings are clearly named.

Check Class Dojo regularly for current messages, reminders and celebrations.

Our PARK values Like the phoenix, we believe children can grow through challenge. We show perseverance when learning feels difficult, aspiration by aiming high, respect through listening and responsible choices, and kindness by supporting one another.

    Keeping in touch

We believe that strong links between school and home help children to feel happy, secure and ready to achieve their best. Class Dojo is our main way of sharing class news, reminders and celebrations. If you have a question or anything that may help us support your child, please contact the class team. For urgent messages, including absence, please contact the school office.
