Year 2 - Unicorn Class

Class team: Mr Boulton and Miss Barker

Welcome to Unicorn Class. This year begins with time to settle into new routines, strengthen friendships and create a happy, supportive classroom. We will help children develop confidence and independence while celebrating their efforts, achievements and the many memorable moments they create together.

Learning in our class

Our Autumn 1 topic is Marvellous Me and Our Local Area. Children explore themselves, their families, friendships and what makes each person unique before discovering important places, people and features in the community. English is inspired by The Colour Monster, Here We Are and The Hummingbird, alongside Level 6 phonics. Maths focuses on number and place value to 100. Science covers living things and habitats, while geography develops map skills through local fieldwork. Art, PE, PSHE and RE also connect creativity, teamwork, emotions and belonging.

Reading and learning at home

Please read together regularly and encourage your child to talk about unfamiliar words, characters and events. Weekly spellings are tested on Friday; short, frequent practice is most effective. Counting in 2s, 5s and 10s, discussing tens and ones, and playing number games will support maths fluency.

Useful class information

  • PE is on Tuesday and Wednesday. Children should attend in the correct school PE kit; football kits are not permitted.
  • Morning snacks may be purchased: toast 30p, teacake 40p, croissant 60p and pizza 60p on Fridays. Send money in a clearly named packet.
  • Check Class Dojo for current reminders and updates.

Our PARK values  Unicorn Class is a place where children feel valued and included. We show kindness in our friendships, respect for our community, perseverance in our learning and aspiration as we become increasingly confident and independent.

Keeping in touch

We believe that strong links between school and home help children to feel happy, secure and ready to achieve their best. Class Dojo is our main way of sharing class news, reminders and celebrations. If you have a question or anything that may help us support your child, please contact the class team. For urgent messages, including absence, please contact the school office.
